Manasquan means Menach'hen, "island" and esquand, "door."

Construction of the reservoir on Timber Swamp Brook began in 1987. In 1990 the facility began serving area customers, including operation of the Joseph C. Irwin Recreation Area.

With a 4 billion-gallon high water capacity and maximum 40-foot depth, the Reservoir can supply up to 30 million gallons of water a day. Water from the Manasquan River is pumped to the 770-acre Reservoir through a pipeline that is 66" in diameter and over 5 miles long. This reduces the amount of water drawn from underground aquifers.

The Reservoir is part of 1,200 acres that include woods and wetlands, a 5 mile perimeter trail, fishing and boating areas, and a Visitor Center.

Facilities and Activities:

Activity Center, Boating, Fishing, Food Concession, Ice Skating, Restrooms, Skiing, Cross-Country, Trails.

Visitor Center: You can enjoy a spectacular view of the Reservoir from the Visitors Center's second level observation deck. The building includes a lounge area with fireplace, food concession, and rest rooms. A boat rental and bait shop is on the lower level where you can find vending machines and rest rooms.
