Traction Line Recreation Trail

US 80 to I-287 to Morristown; take exit 36; drive east on County Route 510 about one block to the intersection with Morris Avenue; park on the street near George Washington's HQs. 


The trail here is a segment of the old Morris Traction Company Trolley Line (MTC).

1899  --  MTC chartered.  There were 32 interconnected routes from Lake Hopatcong to Elizabeth. 

1913  --  MTC incorporated as a steam railroad (thereby giving it land condemnation authority).

1914  --  trolley service between Morristown and Maplewood.

1927  -- MTC sold at public auction. The New Jersey Public Utilities Commission approves the dissolution of the corporation.

1986  --  the Traction Line Recreation Trail dedicated.  The land donated by the Jersey Central Power and Light Company (JCP&L).

1998  -- one-mile extension between Convent Road and Danforth Road in Madision dedicated.  JCP&L and Fairleigh Dickenson University donated the land.

Biking, cross-country skiing, fitness stations, hiking trails available.


Three miles of paved path.  The trail starts at the intersection of Morris Avenue and Washington Avenue, across from Washington's Headquarters and heads to Convent Road in Madison.
