White Pond MUA
Rte 301 & Farmers Mill Road, Kent, Putnam County, New York
 276 acres

Take the Taconic State Parkway to the exit for Carmel.  Take Route 301 northeast.  Where Rt 301 turns right (southeast), keep going straight heading on Farmers Mills Road (Route 42) to a left turn onto White Pond Road.  Park in the parking areas near the lake.

Pond, hardwood forest. Fishing. No hunting or camping. Boat launch. Looking north from the parking area, Money Ledge is on the left (at one time cleared for agriculture) and Stormville Mountain is in the back, center.

"Sitting at an important junction on the Phillipstown Pike was the village of Farmer's Mills. Water was used from White Pond as a source of energy to make this hamlet one of the most important inland towns in the region. It was a central point for processing and milling the abundant grain from farms in the area and as far away as Litchfield, Connecticut. Grains gathered from farmers to our west were processed, ground and packaged for shipment through Cold Spring. It was not until the railroad came to Brewster (along with the creation of the Boyd's Corners Reservoir) that Farmer's Mills fell into decline. All that is left of this town today is the sluice from White Pond, a one room schoolhouse, some cemeteries and old foundations one might find while hiking in our woods."

You can't really walk all the way around White Pond because much of it is closely bordered by White Pond Road. But you can go counter clockwise around 1/4 or 1/3 of the area. Near the hemlock-mountain laurel-Canada mayflower forest there is a yellow marked trail (State of New York, Environmental Conservation). The trail just simply stops apparently and you have to turn around and go back the way you came unless you want to bushwhack.
