Turkey Hill Mountain and Long Mountain
Bear Mountain Area, Rockland County, NY

Directions:

from Bear Mountain traffic circle; take Route 6 west to Queensboro circle; not far west from here is a pull-off.

Geology:

On the northern side of the two parallel running mountains waters from Stillwell Lake travel southeast and then south via the Popolopen Brook and on into Popolopen Creek that empties into the Hudson River between Bear Mountain on the south and Fort Montgomery on the north.

History:

In April 1933 the Civilian Conservation Corps began building the Turkey Hill reservoir here. Water going over the dam goes down the brook into the Queensboro Lake reservoir.

Geology:

There is a 360-degree view with Bear Mountain to the east and Turkey Hill Lake directly below.

Trails:

The Long Path climbs up the summit of Long Mountain from the east (Popolopen Gorge Trail intersection).

At the summit of Long Mountain is the Torrey Memorial. Raymond Torrey (1880-1938) was president of the Torrey Botanical Society in 1938. He was also chairman of the NY-NJ TC. Vincent Schaefer of the Mohawk Valley Hiking Club originated the Long Path idea in the 1930s. It was New York's version of Vermont's Long Trail. Raymond Torrey had a weekly column in the New York Post and he popularized the path.
