1,100 foot high, prominent, stark-white crag overlooking the valley.
1705 -- the name first appeared. It designated a kill (stream) and region of fertile lowland along the Wallkill River. Bontecou literally means "spotted cow" in Dutch.

On the exposed bedrock atop the crag, the vegetation is sparse: pitch pines, a few gray birches, lowbush blueberries, mosses, and lichens.
