It was originally developed in the late 1930s by Leonard Buck as part of his estate. The plantings include an extensive collection of azaleas and rhododendrons, wildflowers, a fern collections, exotic alpines and rockery plants.

The Garden was donated by Mr. Buck's widow, Helen Buck, to the Somerset County Park Commission in 1976.

This is one of the premier rock gardens in the East. Amid rock outcropping are exotic rock garden plants. On a slope behind the center is the F. Gordon Foster Hardy Fern Collection, which includes Christmas, northern, maidenhair, and rare fern species from Japan.
