PYRAMID MOUNTAIN
Bourough of Kinnelon and Montville Township, Morris County

Directions:

From Interstate 287 north bound; exit 44 Main Street Boonton. Proceed to Boonton Avenue (County Road 511). Turn Right. Proceed 3.3 miles on Boonton Avenue. Visitors Center on left (opposite Mars Court firm).

History:

The park booklets says that this land was used as a hunting, fishing, and gathering site for the Lenape Indians and other native Americans. Many of the first white settlers were of Dutch extraction. The stone walls in the area mark the homestead farms and woodlot boundaries.

The Cat Rocks and the Big and Little Cat Swamps were named for the bobcats who still inhabit the caves and shallow depressions of the region.

Pyramid Mountain was saved by a group of local activists led by Lucy Meyer of Kinnelon. (On the blue trail, Lucy's Overlook is named for her.)

The ultimate goal is to save Pyramid, Stony Brook, and Turkey Mountain, and Rock Pear.

Trails:

More than 1000 acres of rugged trails, fields, forests, rock outcroppings and wetlands.

You can make a circular walk by taking the blue trail to the white trail north to Bear Swamp, crossing the boardwalk bridge and picking up the blue trail that will take you back to the visitor's center.

Blue Trail (Mennen Trail). Pick this up near the Visitors Center. It goes northeast up Pyramid Mountain, Lucy's Overlook, Bear Swamp, leaves the area crossing Vreeland Brook and then heading northwest and north on the Butler Montville Trail.

Across the street from the Visitor Center are trails that led to Turkey Mountain.
