History:

Gorey Brook is the name of the site that writer Washington Irving called Sleepy Hollow.

late 1800s -- the Rockefellers come to the Pocantico Hills area.

John D. Rockefeller, Jr. had a great love for harness driving and the 20+ miles of carriage roads in the park are the result. The Rockefeller estate, Kykuit, is adjacent to the preserve. Kykuit means "high point" or "look out" in Dutch.

1983 -- the Rockefellers start giving land for the future Rockefeller Preserve.

(Source: Christie, Les. October 2002. "Stopping by Woods: Whether or not the woods are full of snow, the Rockefeller Preserve is always an inspired place to visit." Wildlife Conservation, pp. 40-41.)

Habitats:

Hills, woods, fields, streams, and Swan lake.

Trails:

20 miles of wide carriage trails. The most popular walk (especially at lunch time for office workers) is around Swan Lake not far from the nature center. But there are many other walks here also.

Field Trip Reports

Rockefeller State Park Preserve, Pocantico Hills, Westchester, N.Y. August 10, 1996.

On the morning of a sunny day, the Torrey group toured the shores of Swan Lake. Among the plants in bloom were Alisma subcordatum, Hypericum mutilum, Lobelia inflata, Ludwigia palustris, Mazus pumilus, Myosotis scorpioides, Nymphaea odorata, Polygonum hydropiperoides and P. lapathifolium. Along the trail around the lake, the group found the fruits of thimbleweed (Anemone virginiana) and the blooms of rough hawkweed (Hieracium scabrum).

After lunch, the group toured the fields and wet meadows around the parking areas. In bloom were woodland agrimony (Agrimonia striata), scarlet pimpernel (Anagallis arvensis), Aralia spinosa, Galium mollugo, Helianthus strumosus, blue lettuce (Lactuca biennis), whorled milkwort (Polygala verticillata), Solanum nigrum, blue curls (Trichostema dichotomum), and Vernonia noveboracensis.

Total attendance was 12. The leader was Dr. Patrick L. Cooney.

Rockefeller State Park Preserve, Pocantico Hills, Westchester, N.Y. September 9, 2002.

On a warm, sunny day the group toured the western part of Swan Lake. An interesting plant was Aralia elata (Japanese angelica tree). Many people had thought it was Aralia spinosa (Hercules' club), but the mature A. elata did not have spines on its leaves, the leaf stalk was very short, and the blackish berries were arranged in numerous small circles. Another interesting plant was the five-leaflet vine: Akebia quinata (akebia). An interesting dodder vine was Cuscuta obtusiflora (southern dodder). Lots of smartweeds were found in bloom including: Polygonum cespitosum, P. cuspidatum, P. hydropiperoides, P. lapathifolium, P. persicaria, P. sagittatum, and P. virginianum.

Those botanists remaining after lunch toured the northern part of Swan Lake. The sunflower that we had to pass by in the morning for lack of time was found to be Helianthus decapetalus (thin-leaved sunflower). On the return trips to the car, the trip leader found plant new to the smaller group: Torilis japonica (Japanese hedge parsley).

Total attendance was 12. The trip leader was Steve Glenn. Attendees were Patrick and Rosemary Cooney, Ed and Yirka Emerson, Joyce Hyon, Augie Matzdorf, Leonard Miller, Kate Peyser, Michael St. John, and Bill and Eleanor Standaert.
