Fahnestock State Park  (Hidden Lake)
Putnam County, NY

Directions:

Located in Putnam County, 8 miles east of Cold Spring.
3.5 miles from the Taconic via Route 301; left turn onto Dennytown Road (or 2.4 miles from Route 9);
0.7 mile from intersection of Dennytown Road and Route 301;
park by the parking lot at Surprise Lake Road or head down the road and park closer to the lake on the left

The AT parking lot on Dennytown Road is 1.2 miles south of the intersection of Dennytown Road and Route 301, on Dennytown Road. There is a little stone hut on the right (east) side and a wide open field along with a bulletin board.

At 2.6 miles, turn S. Highland Road. The AT crosses S. Highland Road (.35 miles from Dennytown Road) at .35 mile from its intersection with Dennytown Road.

The AT crosses Canopus Hill Road at .35 mile from the point at where it turns right. This is confusing , because there are three directions in which Canopus Hill Road goes at this point, north, south and west. (If coming from Oscawanna Lake Road, it is 1.4 miles from the intersection of this road with a left turn of Canopus Hill Road at the three way intersection.) The AT comes down a steep hill and crosses over a stream at the base of the hill.

History:

In the 1860s, five mines operated on Sunken Mine Mountain. Known as the Canada Mines Group, the largest was the Sunk or Stewart Mine: 1,500 feet long and 300 feet deep. Odelltown, an entire community, flourished on Canopus Creek at the foot of Sunken Mine Mountain. A railroad on site transported the ore to NY 301 where horse and wagon carted it to the foundry at Cold Spring and then by barge to New York City.

In 1691 Adolphe Philipse purchased the land.

Trails:

It has many miles of trails that will take you far from the crowds. There is a figure-eight walk that loops around its southern hills and ridges. 6,200 acres.

Blue trail leads to deep forest of tremendously tall hemlock. Tailings of an abandoned mine on your right. These mines provided ore to the West Point Foundry at Cold Spring. This was turned into the Parrot guns of the Union Army artillery.

Habitats:

Lovely marsh with lots of birds. You turn right past fields of hay-scented fern and down to a charming little brook.

Manmade pond filled with stumps.

Gorgeous maples shade the head of the marsh.

There are two high ridges in the western portion of Fahnestock Park, one culminating in Candlewood Hill in the south and the other in Mt. Shenandoah (1282 feet), a little north of the Park boundary.

Canopus Creek flows through a beautiful rugged ravine in the southwest.

Much of the remaining portion of the Park is rolling country covered with second-growth hardwood forests and a few old hemlock groves.
