MOUNT HOLLY SANCTUARY (west of Mt. Holly Preserve)
Bedford and Lewisboro, Westchester County, NY
Take I-684 north and get off at Exit 6 for Route 35 east to a left turn onto Holly Branch Road. Right turn onto Mt. Holly Road at the T-intersection. Mt. Holly Road turns left (across the intersection is Mt. Holly Road East). Pass by the first right turn (for Mt. Holly preserve); there is a small parking lot on the left.
From 1795 Jonah Holly and his descendants farmed the area.
In 1975 TNC aided by local citizens purchased the property from the estate of Edward A. Norman when the preserve was threatened with development.
Highest elevation is 621 feet. There are outcrops of Fordham gneiss.
Small pond, two swamps, stream, and marsh.
We hiked clockwise; southwest on the blue trail; orange trail through acres and acres of Japanese barberry; down an unmarked trail to 2 ponds/shrub swamps connecting by a little stream; picked up yellow trail; uphill to intersection with blue trail; then got the red trail to back to where we started.
