North of Huntington on Llyod Neck is Caumsett State Park, where one has access to the pebbled beach and can examine the glacial materials of the seacliff.  This section of coast is constructed of the so-called Sands Point recessional moraine, "recessional" because it was formed where the ice stood after receding northward, rather than advancing and then stabilizing.  The steep cliffs display badlands erosion, with many closely spaced angular ravines with sharp ridges between them.  They are made up of well-bedded pebble gravels with lots of white quartzites, some sand lenses and layers, and occasional clay.  Strewn about the gravelly beach and offshore are large boulders representing a wide variety of metamorphic rock types, igneous basalts, red conglomerates, and others.  These are glacial erractics from the mainland to the north. (Van Diver 1985:69-71)

History:

Caumsett Stat Park was acquired by New York State in 1961.  Located at Lloyd Neck in the Town of Huntington, it is situated on a most scenic peninsula extending into Long Island Sound.  In 1921 about 1750 acres of Lloyd Neck was purchased by Marshall Field III and formed into one large estate.  He gave the land its original Matinecock Indian name, Caumsett, which means "place by a sharp rock."

Marshall Field III, the former estate owner, was the grandson of the famous department store pioneer.  Field, the founder and publisher of the New York P. M. and the Chicago Sun-Times newspapers, was known for his endeavors in philanthropy and civil leadership.  In 1940, he established the Field Foundation, a charitable organization whose purpose was to deal with the problems of child welfare, social and racial relations and education.

Field then began to create an English-style estate.  The self-sufficient rural establishment was a combination of country club, hunting preserve and home.  In 1922, he engaged New York City architect John Russell Pope to advise him on the design of the estate.  When finished, the estate had facilities for every sport except golf.

Field developed a herd of eighty head of prize cattle and a complete dairy farm.  The self-sufficient, self-contained community had its own water and electrical supply.  Vegetables were raised in its truck gardens and wood came from the estate's own stands of oak, pine, dogwood and locust.

1961 -- Field's widow sold almost 1,500 acres to New York State and Caumsett State Park was created.

Habitats

Approximately 1500 acres of woodland, meadows, rock shoreline, salt marsh and former farm and garden areas make up the park.  This is an oak-tulip tree forest; mesophytic hardwood forest: red oak, tulip tree, beech, black birch, black oak, and white oak; flowering dogwood, witch hazel, sassafras, maple leaf viburnum, black and blue berries.
