FRANKLIN POND PRESERVE (NATURE CONSERVANCY)
Off Route 108, Cold Spring Harbor

Take the Long Island Expressway to exit #45 north (Manetto Hill Road/Plainview/Woodbury). Go north on Woodbury Road for 3.4 miles. Turn left (north) onto Rout 108/Harbor Road; go .8 mile. Turn left (west) onto a dirt road. Go .1 mile to preserve.
1680 -- here were both saw and grist mills.
just prior to the Civil War -- the mills closed and the area became a summer resort through the 1930s.
1977 -- the preserve donated to The Nature Conservancy.
It consists of a pond, mud flats, woodland swamps, red maple swamps, and a moist oak community. The preserve is host to a wide variety of ducks, herons, sandpipers, gulls, reptiles, and amphibians. Please telephone the Conservancy at the above number to obtain permission to visit the preserve.
