BIG WOODS NATURE PRESERVE
TNC preserve on South Fork, Southampton Township, Suffolk County, NY

The preserve is adjacent to the Emma Rose Elliston Memorial Park and across the street is the Wolf Swamp Preserve


Directions:

Head east on Sunrise Highway (Rt. 27) over Shinnecock Canal and drive about 5 miles until you pass the Southampton College RR station on your right and the Shinnecock golf course on the left; turn left at first traffic light after golf course onto North Magee Street; go about 1.5 miles and at a 5-way intersection bear right (not sharp right) onto Millstone Brook Road; drive 1/4 mile farther. Look for fence, gate, and sign. Parking along road.


Geology:

part of the Peconic Estuary system, located on Little Sebonac Creek, the preserve overlooks the Great Peconic Bay


History:

1995  --  The Nature Conservancy, in partnership with Southampton Town, acquires 87 acres for the Big Woods Preserve.
